Workshops offered: I currently offer three workshops (below).
Please contact me if you want to inquire about having me teach at your facility.
Botanical Sketching: During this one or two day workshop, students focus on realistic sketching and representation of plants in an outdoor setting (weather permitting). Topics covered are: seeing accurately, sketching techniques, tonal values and reflected light, foreshortening, perspective, negative space, and basic plant morphology. This class is recommended for beginner to intermediate students.
Painting Orchids in Watercolor: During this 4 or 5 day studio workshop, students will receive an orchid to render in watercolor. The emphasis is on realistic portrayal of the orchid using primarily wet in wet techniques. Topics include measuring and accurately sketching, tonal values to represent form, composition, and color concepts such as warm/cool relationships, hue and value. This workshop is recommended for students with drawing and watercolor background.
Botanical Drawings on Clayboard®: Clayboard® is a wonderful ground for graphite or pencil renderings. The clay surface of the board can be scraped away to create intricate and detailed textures that are difficult to accomplish on paper. The emphasis is on accurate, continuous tone portrayal of a plant. Topics covered are: seeing accurately, sketching techniques, tonal values and reflected light, foreshortening, perspective, negative space, and basic plant morphology. Workshop is two days long and recommended for all skill levels.
